The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended indefinitely a member representing Obubra State Constituency, Dickson Agbor, over allegations that he physically assaulted his wife.
The decision was reached during plenary on Thursday, March 5, 2026, after lawmakers deliberated on the reported domestic dispute involving the legislator.
The House resolved that the suspension would remain in effect pending the outcome of a full investigation into the alleged incident.
However, in a dramatic twist, the lawmaker’s wife, Glory Agbor—who was reported to have been battered—publicly apologized to her husband and appealed to the public to respect the privacy of their family.
Lawmakers Condemn Alleged Conduct
Moving the motion for Agbor’s suspension, Hon. Davies Etta described the alleged act as unacceptable and inconsistent with the standards expected of public office holders.
He stressed that lawmakers must maintain conduct that reflects the trust placed in them by the electorate.
“We must ensure that members conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the values and responsibilities entrusted to us by the people”, Hon Etta stated.
Following deliberations, the Assembly resolved to suspend the lawmaker indefinitely while a detailed investigation is conducted into the alleged family dispute and the circumstances surrounding the reported assault.
The House also approved the formation of an ad-hoc committee tasked with carrying out a thorough inquiry into the incident.
Speaker Reacts
Reacting to the development, the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to maintaining discipline and protecting the integrity of the legislative institution.
He warned that the House would not tolerate any behaviour capable of damaging its reputation.
“The House will not condone any form of misconduct capable of bringing the legislature into disrepute . We must continue to uphold the dignity of this institution” the Speaker warned.
Wife Defends Husband, Calls It a Private Matter
In a surprising turn of events, Glory Agbor publicly disagreed with the decision of the lawmakers to suspend her husband.
She also announced her withdrawal from the Legislators Wives Association, accusing some individuals of trying to exploit what she described as a minor marital disagreement to create unnecessary controversy.
According to her, the issue had already been resolved privately between her and her husband.
She urged the public, including lawmakers, to treat the matter as a personal family issue.
“There is no doubt that some people have tried to paint the name of my family in a bad light, but I stand here to vehemently debunk that view against my family, and state it clearly that my husband and I are at peace with each other.
“Even though issues arose ,we have been able to amicably resolve our differences. As I said, this is my family, and no marriage is totally perfect. Please leave my family alone” Glory pleaded.
Investigation Ongoing
With the lawmaker now under indefinite suspension, the ad-hoc committee set up by the House is expected to conduct a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and submit its findings for further legislative action.
The development has sparked widespread debate across the state, raising concerns about domestic violence, public accountability, and the expectations placed on elected officials.
