Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has urged opposition parties to rise against the Senate’s rejection of mandatory electronic transmission of election results.
According to Naija News, Amaechi joined a protest at the National Assembly on Tuesday morning, where he addressed journalists on the issue.
He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of opposing electronic transmission out of fear that it could lose future elections, insisting that the decision undermines electoral transparency.
Amaechi called on opposition parties to put aside their differences and jointly resist what he described as an attempt by a single party to dominate the electoral process.
“I believe that the opposition parties should come out PDP, ADC, everybody should be out to protest against the attempt of one party,” Amaechi said.
Reacting to claims that such protests could be hijacked by opposition elements, Amaechi dismissed the argument and turned the question back on the ruling party.
“If we come out, and they say the opposition has hijacked the protest, what is APC doing? Are they not hijacking? What are they afraid of? I thought they said they have 31 governors. Tinubu is not Jonathan. The only way a good politician will know he has done well is by the people,” he stated.
The former minister also questioned why the APC would feel threatened despite frequently boasting about controlling many state governments and attracting high-profile defections from opposition parties.
Amaechi further expressed doubt that Senate President Godswill Akpabio or President Bola Tinubu would adequately address Nigerians’ concerns, stressing that opposition parties and civil society organisations would continue to resist the decision until it is reversed.
