Former Minister of Communications, Isa Pantami, has denied claims that he once described politics as haram (evil).
Pantami, who served under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, addressed the issue on Friday during an interview with BBC Hausa.
Explaining his involvement in politics, he said his intention has always been to promote good governance for his people and for Nigeria as a whole.
He said, “I never said politics is haram.
“I have been a registered APC member since 2019. It’s in the Nigerian constitution that you can’t be a minister if you’re not registered with a political party.”
Denial of Alleged Involvement in Student’s Death
Pantami also dismissed allegations linking him to the killing of a student of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, identified as Sunday Achi.
The allegation resurfaced after a user on 𝕏 referenced a publication by Punch, accusing the former minister of playing a role in the 2004 death of the student and allegedly attempting to clear himself of responsibility.
According to the referenced publication, Pantami was serving as Chief Imam of the ATBU mosque at the time the incident occurred, when a fatwa allegedly led to the student’s death.
The 𝕏 user wrote, “You that killed a student in ATBU, you’re now forming holier than thou. Ori e ti daru pantami.”
Reacting to the accusation, Pantami strongly denied any involvement and challenged the user to either make their identity known or pursue the matter legally.
He said, “Thank you for saying your mind. You are making an allegation that is 100% untrue. I have never killed or directed anyone to kill anyone in my life. Either directly or indirectly. If you have any evidence of that, kindly help the relatives of the deceased and take the matter to court. Alternatively, if you are strong enough, provide your full details so that I can take you to court for the false allegation.”
