A young woman identified as Umuora Mmesoma has reportedly been killed by her former boyfriend in Uga, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, following the alleged breakdown of their relationship.
Mmesoma was reportedly declared missing on Friday, October 16, 2026, before her body was later discovered.
According to accounts circulating on social media, the suspect, identified as Chima, allegedly admitted to killing the young woman because she ended their relationship.
In a video currently circulating online, the suspect was reportedly heard saying that he killed Mmesoma in his house in Uga, placed her body inside a bag and dumped it at an undisclosed location.
The circumstances surrounding the incident have sparked renewed concerns about violence against women and the dangers of abusive relationships.
As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident. However, reports indicated that the suspect had been handed over to the police.
Reacting to the development, Dr. Uche Nworah, a former Special Adviser on General Duties to the Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, condemned the reported killing, stressing that heartbreak or the end of a relationship could never justify taking another person's life.
In a Facebook post on Friday, Nworah wrote:
“It is tragic that a young woman should lose her life for exercising her right to walk away from a relationship she no longer wished to continue.
“Love should never become a death sentence. No disagreement, rejection or heartbreak justifies taking another person’s life.
“I am relieved that the suspect has reportedly been apprehended, although his arrest can never bring back the precious life that has been lost.”
The reported killing has once again drawn attention to the need to address violence in intimate relationships and to respect an individual's right to leave a relationship.
The allegations against the suspect have not been independently verified, and an official police account of the incident was still awaited at the time of reporting.
