The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that a Nigerian TikToker identified as Mirabel has been arrested over allegations of making a false r•pe claim.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed on Friday that the social media influencer is currently in police custody.
He noted that investigations are ongoing and that the next course of action would be determined by the outcome of the probe.
“We have her. Investigations will explain the next line of action,” he told Peoples Gazette.
The controversy began after Mirabel, who uses the TikTok handle @mirab351, shared videos online alleging that she was s•xually assaulted in her apartment located in Ogijo, Ogun State.
In the videos, she claimed that the man involved restrained her and allegedly bragged that his family’s influence would protect him from any legal consequences.
Her posts rapidly gained traction across social media platforms, trending with hashtags such as #StopR•pingWomen and prompting widespread public outrage, including calls for justice and swift police intervention.
At the initial stage of the matter, the police clarified that Mirabel was not under arrest but was being treated as a complainant after she reported the alleged incident.
Following the public reaction, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State reportedly instructed officers at the Ibafo Division to contact her.
She later appeared at the police station, where she provided an initial statement. She was subsequently taken for medical examination, and the case was transferred to the Ogijo Police Station for further handling.
Police authorities also stated that she received medical attention due to her emotional and physical condition while the investigation was in progress.
In earlier updates, the command emphasized its commitment to due process, reiterating that anyone found guilty of s•xual assault would be prosecuted in accordance with the law. The police also reminded the public that providing false information to law enforcement agencies constitutes a criminal offence under Nigerian law.
The situation shifted, however, when Mirabel retracted her allegations. In a viral audio recording, she admitted that aspects of her story were untrue and offered an apology to the public.
