Former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has claimed that the APC-led Federal Government may be planning his arrest amid rising political tension in Nigeria.
Naija News reports that El-Rufai, once a prominent APC chieftain and now a member of the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), also alleged that some politicians are being pressured to either defect to the ruling party or remain loyal to it.
He made these claims during an interview with BBC Hausa.
The former governor, who has recently stepped up his criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and the APC, stated that while he has not yet been arrested, several of his close associates have already been detained.
“Four people we worked with in Kaduna have been arrested; so it’s only a matter of time before they come for me too,” Daily Trust quoted El-Rufai saying in the said interview with BBC Hausa.
His comments underscore the growing political tension between El-Rufai and the party under which he served for eight years before defecting.
El-Rufai further alleged that political actors are being coerced into aligning with the ruling APC.
According to him, this pressure is part of a broader strategy aimed at weakening opposition voices ahead of future political contests.
The statement comes amid the arrest and ongoing trial of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has accused Malami of offences including abuse of office and money laundering. Authorities later rearrested him over alleged involvement in terrorism financing.
Malami, who is seen as a key opposition figure to President Tinubu following his defection from the APC to the ADC, has denied the allegations, describing them as a political witch-hunt.
